About the Wirehaired Vizsla
The Wirehaired Vizsla was developed in Hungary in the 1930s by crossing the smooth Vizsla with the German Wirehaired Pointer to create a more robust, weather-resistant version of the beloved Hungarian pointer. Their dense, wiry coat provides better protection against cold, brambles, and water than the smooth Vizsla's thin coat, while retaining the breed's gentle, loyal temperament. Wirehaired Vizslas are versatile hunters, loyal family companions, and excellent at canine sports. They share the smooth Vizsla's golden-rust color and affectionate nature but with added hardiness and a distinctive bearded face.

Frequently Asked Questions
- The most obvious difference is the coat โ Wirehaired Vizslas have a dense, wiry coat with a distinctive beard and eyebrows, while smooth Vizslas have a short, sleek coat. Wirehaired Vizslas are slightly heavier and more robust. They are better suited to cold weather, thick brush, and water work thanks to their protective coat. Temperamentally, they are very similar โ both are loyal, gentle, and affectionate. Wirehaired Vizslas may be slightly calmer and more independent than the famously clingy smooth Vizsla, but both are deeply bonded 'Velcro dogs' that stick close to their owners.
- Wirehaired Vizslas are excellent family dogs for active households. They are gentle, patient, and wonderful with children. Like smooth Vizslas, they form deep bonds with their family and want to be involved in all activities. They are sociable with other dogs and generally welcoming of visitors. Their moderate size, trainable nature, and affectionate temperament make them outstanding all-around family companions. The main requirement is daily exercise โ they need an active family committed to at least an hour of vigorous activity. They do not do well when left alone for long periods.
- Wirehaired Vizslas have relatively easy grooming needs. Their wiry coat benefits from weekly brushing and occasional hand-stripping two to three times per year to maintain proper texture. The beard and eyebrows may need trimming to keep them tidy. They shed less than smooth Vizslas because the wiry coat traps dead hair. No professional grooming is typically needed. Their coat is naturally dirt-resistant and dries quickly after swimming. Overall, they are a low-maintenance breed grooming-wise, especially compared to long-coated sporting breeds.
