About the Bracco Italiano
The Bracco Italiano (Italian Pointing Dog) is one of the oldest European pointing breeds, with origins tracing back to 4th or 5th century Italy. These noble, powerful dogs combine the tracking ability of a hound with the pointing instinct of a gun dog. Their distinctive long, droopy ears, pendulous lips, and soulful expression give them a dignified, almost melancholy appearance that belies their enthusiastic, playful personality. Bracchi (plural) are powerful yet graceful in the field, moving at a distinctive extended trot. They are gentle, affectionate, and increasingly popular as both hunting companions and family dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Bracco Italianos are outstanding family dogs. They are gentle, affectionate, and exceptionally good with children. Their patient, tolerant nature makes them reliable companions for kids of all ages. They get along beautifully with other dogs and are generally sociable with everyone. Their moderate energy level is high enough for active play but not so demanding as to overwhelm a family. They are eager to please and trainable. The main consideration is their size โ large Bracchi can weigh up to 90 pounds โ and their need for daily exercise. For active families, they are wonderful companions.
- Bracco Italianos are moderate droolers. Their pendulous lips and loose facial skin cause some drooling, particularly around food, after drinking water, and during exercise. The drooling is noticeable but less severe than heavy-drooling breeds like Mastiffs or Saint Bernards. Most Bracco owners keep a towel nearby for face-wiping after meals and water breaks. Their long, droopy ears also tend to dip into water bowls, creating additional mess. If you are very sensitive to drool, be prepared for some cleanup, but it is manageable for most owners.
- Bracco Italianos need 60 to 90 minutes of daily exercise. They are athletic sporting dogs bred for endurance in the field, and they need regular outlets for their energy. Long walks, hiking, running, and swimming are ideal activities. They excel at hunting, field trials, and canine sports like agility and obedience. Without adequate exercise, they can become restless and develop unwanted behaviors. However, they are not as hyperactive as some pointing breeds and are generally calm and relaxed indoors once their exercise needs are met.
