About the Swedish Vallhund

The Swedish Vallhund is an ancient Viking herding breed that has been a working farm dog in Sweden for over 1,000 years. Sometimes called the 'Viking dog,' Vallhunds are closely related to Welsh Corgis โ€” though whether Vikings brought their dogs to Wales or Celts brought theirs to Scandinavia is debated. Like Corgis, Vallhunds are low-to-the-ground cattle herders that nipped at heels, but they have a more wolf-like appearance with their gray sable coat and pointed ears. They are energetic, cheerful, and remarkably versatile dogs that retain strong working instincts while being excellent family companions.
