About the Sealyham Terrier
The Sealyham Terrier is a rare, charming Welsh terrier developed in the mid-1800s by Captain John Edwardes at Sealyham House in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Bred to hunt badgers, otters, and foxes, Sealyhams became fashionable companions in the early 1900s, owned by royalty, Hollywood stars (including Alfred Hitchcock, Humphrey Bogart, and Cary Grant), and winning Westminster Best in Show four times. Despite this illustrious history, they are now critically rare. Sealyhams are calm, adaptable, and less hyperactive than many terriers, with a dignified charm and dry sense of humor that wins devoted admirers.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Sealyham Terriers were once among the most popular dog breeds β favored by royalty and Hollywood stars β but have declined dramatically since the mid-20th century. They are now listed as a Vulnerable Native Breed with fewer than 50 puppies registered annually in the UK. Their decline is attributed to changing fashion in dog breeds, the rise of easier-care breeds, and their grooming requirements. Their calm temperament, while ideal for many owners, lacks the flashy energy that attracts attention. Dedicated breed enthusiasts are working to save the Sealyham from extinction through breeding programs and public awareness.
- Sealyham Terriers are excellent apartment dogs β one of the best terrier breeds for small-space living. They are calm, adaptable, and have modest exercise needs (20-30 minutes daily). They are less hyperactive and less vocal than many terrier breeds. Their compact size and low-shedding coat are apartment-friendly. They are content with short walks and indoor play. Their dignified, somewhat lazy nature means they are happy to relax on the sofa for most of the day. The main consideration is regular grooming to maintain their wiry coat. For apartment dwellers wanting a terrier, Sealyhams are an outstanding (if rare) choice.
- Yes, Sealyham Terriers were extremely fashionable in Hollywood's golden age. Director Alfred Hitchcock was a devoted Sealyham owner, featuring his dogs in several films. Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, and the British Royal Family all owned Sealyhams. They were considered the height of sophistication in the 1920s-1940s. Their photogenic appearance, portable size, and dignified personality made them ideal celebrity companions. Sadly, their popularity plummeted as larger, more active breeds became fashionable, contributing to their current endangered status.
