About the Airedale Terrier
The Airedale Terrier is the largest of all terrier breeds, standing up to 23 inches tall and weighing 50 to 70 pounds, earning them the title 'King of Terriers.' Developed in the Aire Valley of Yorkshire, England, to hunt otters and rats, Airedales later served as military and police dogs in both World Wars. They are versatile, intelligent, and courageous dogs with the classic terrier spirit in a larger, more capable package. Their wiry tan-and-black coat and confident bearing give them a distinguished, workmanlike appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Airedale Terriers can be excellent family dogs for active households that appreciate the terrier personality. They are playful, loyal, and protective of their families. Airedales tend to be patient with children, though their exuberant energy and size mean they are better suited to families with older kids who can handle a boisterous dog. They need firm, consistent training and plenty of exercise. Airedales are not content to be ignored β they want to be involved in family activities and can become destructive if left alone for long periods.
- Airedale Terriers are low shedders thanks to their wiry double coat. Dead hair tends to stay in the coat rather than falling around the house, making them a reasonable choice for people with mild allergies. However, their coat requires regular maintenance β professional grooming (hand-stripping or clipping) every six to eight weeks, plus weekly brushing between appointments. Hand-stripping maintains the proper hard coat texture, while clipping is easier but results in a softer, less weather-resistant coat. Their beard also collects food and water and needs daily cleaning.
- Airedale Terriers need 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. As the largest terrier breed with a strong working heritage, they have significant energy that needs constructive outlets. Long walks, runs, hiking, swimming, and interactive play sessions are all excellent options. Airedales also need mental stimulation β puzzle toys, training sessions, and nose work help prevent boredom. Without adequate exercise, they will channel their energy into destructive behaviors like digging, chewing, and barking. They make excellent hiking and adventure companions for active owners.
