About the Polish Lowland Sheepdog
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, known in Poland as the Polski Owczarek Nizinny (PON), is a shaggy, medium-sized herding breed that has worked the plains of Poland for centuries. PONs are believed to have contributed to the development of the Bearded Collie when Polish sailors brought them to Scotland in the 1500s. They are intelligent, confident, and surprisingly strong-willed for their size. Their long, thick coat covers their eyes and gives them a teddy-bear-like appearance. PONs are watchful, loyal, and have excellent memories โ they rarely forget a command, a face, or an offense.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Yes, PONs can see through their long facial hair, though their vision is somewhat filtered. The hair over their eyes was bred intentionally โ in Poland's flat, windswept plains, the hair protects their eyes from sun glare, wind, dust, and debris. Many owners choose to clip or tie back the facial hair to improve visibility and prevent eye irritation. For show dogs, the hair is left natural. If you leave the facial hair long, regular cleaning around the eyes is important to prevent irritation and tear staining. Some breeders believe the hair actually helps by reducing sun glare on the flat Polish landscape.
- PONs are intelligent and confident, which can manifest as stubbornness. They were bred to make independent decisions while herding, and this self-assurance carries into all aspects of life. They will evaluate commands and decide whether compliance is worthwhile. They have excellent memories โ both for training and for perceived slights โ and can hold grudges. Positive reinforcement with consistency and patience works best. They respond poorly to harsh corrections, which may trigger their stubborn streak further. PON owners learn to negotiate rather than demand, using humor and creativity to achieve cooperation.
- Polish Lowland Sheepdogs require significant grooming. Their long, thick double coat must be brushed thoroughly at least every other day to prevent matting. Each session can take 30+ minutes. The facial hair, ears, and leg furnishings are particularly prone to tangling. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks helps maintain the coat. Despite the grooming demands, PONs shed less than expected because dead hair gets trapped in the coat (which is why matting occurs). Many pet owners keep the coat in a shorter trim to reduce daily maintenance while preserving the breed's characteristic shaggy appearance.
