About the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (pronounced 'NAY-der-lahn-seh KOY-ker-HUND-yeh') is a charming Dutch sporting breed that lured ducks into traps called 'eendenkooi' by playfully prancing along canal banks, their flowing red-and-white coat and feathered tail attracting curious waterfowl closer. Nearly extinct after World War II (only 25 dogs survived), the breed was painstakingly rebuilt. Kooikers are cheerful, good-natured, and alert dogs that have been depicted in Dutch Master paintings by Rembrandt and Jan Steen. Their distinctive black ear tips, called 'earrings,' and waterfall-like tail are their most recognizable features.

Frequently Asked Questions
- The 'earrings' of a Kooikerhondje are distinctive black tips on the long feathering of their ears. These dark-tipped ear hairs are highly prized and are a hallmark of the breed, mentioned in the breed standard. Not all Kooikers have equally prominent earrings โ some have dramatic black tips while others have more subtle ones. The earrings, combined with their flowing red-and-white coat and alert expression, give the breed a unique and recognizable appearance that has been captured in Dutch paintings for centuries.
- Both involve attracting ducks, but the methods differ. Kooikerhondjes were used for decoying โ they pranced along the banks of a man-made canal trap (eendenkooi) to attract wild ducks, which followed the dog deeper into the increasingly narrow canal until they could be caught in nets. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers toll โ they play along the shoreline to lure ducks within gunshot range. Decoying captures ducks alive (historically for banding and population studies), while tolling brings them into shooting range. Kooikers still demonstrate decoying at Dutch heritage sites today.
- Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes can adapt well to apartment living. Their moderate size (20-30 lbs), relatively calm indoor temperament, and moderate exercise needs (40-60 minutes daily) make them manageable in apartments. They are not excessive barkers and are generally clean and quiet indoors. Their main needs are daily walks, some play, and mental stimulation. They are sensitive dogs that can be initially reserved with strangers but warm up quickly. For their size, they are one of the better sporting breeds for apartment dwelling, though they still need daily outdoor activity.
