About the Clumber Spaniel
The Clumber Spaniel is the largest of the sporting spaniels and one of the most distinctive, with a massive head, deep body, and slow, rolling gait. Developed at Clumber Park, the Duke of Newcastle's estate in England, they were the chosen hunting companions of British royalty, including Edward VII and George V. Unlike most spaniels, Clumbers are calm, dignified, and methodical โ they hunt at a deliberate pace, making them ideal for older or less mobile hunters. Their gentle, loyal nature and laid-back temperament make them exceptional house companions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Yes, Clumber Spaniels are heavy shedders. Their dense, flat coat sheds year-round, with heavier shedding during seasonal changes in spring and fall. White hair will be found on furniture, clothing, and floors constantly. Regular brushing two to three times per week helps manage loose hair, and daily brushing during heavy shedding periods is recommended. Clumber owners quickly learn that lint rollers are essential accessories. Despite the shedding, the coat itself is not difficult to maintain โ it does not mat easily and requires minimal professional grooming.
- Clumber Spaniels are not lazy but they are significantly calmer and less energetic than most sporting breeds. They are content with 30 to 45 minutes of moderate daily exercise โ walks and some playtime โ rather than the hours of vigorous activity most spaniels need. Indoors, they are true couch potatoes that enjoy lounging on comfortable furniture. This lower energy level makes them one of the few sporting breeds suitable for less active owners. However, they are working dogs at heart and enjoy field activities, nose work, and swimming when given the opportunity.
- Yes, Clumber Spaniels drool more than most sporting breeds due to their heavy jowls and loose lips. While not as severe as Mastiffs or Saint Bernards, the drooling is noticeable, especially around food, after drinking water, and during exercise. Many Clumber owners keep towels handy for face-wiping. The drooling is a trade-off for the breed's gentle, calm temperament and low-energy lifestyle. If drool is a concern, be prepared for some cleanup โ but it is manageable compared to the truly heavy-drooling breeds.
