About the Cairn Terrier
The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds, originating on the Isle of Skye in Scotland where they hunted foxes, rats, and other vermin among the rocky cairns (stone piles). Most famously, a Cairn Terrier named Terry played Toto in 'The Wizard of Oz.' These hardy little dogs are curious, alert, and cheerful with a fearless spirit that belies their compact size. Cairns are less aggressive and more adaptable than many terrier breeds, making them popular family pets. Their shaggy, weather-resistant coat and bright, expressive eyes give them an endearing, scruffy charm.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Cairn Terriers are generally good with children, especially when raised together. They are sturdy for their size, playful, and enjoy the energy and attention that children provide. Cairns are more tolerant and less snappy than some terrier breeds, making them reasonable family dogs. However, children should be taught to handle them gently β no terrier enjoys being teased or handled roughly. Very young children who might pull ears or tails could provoke a nip. Cairns also have a tendency to guard food and toys, so teaching sharing behaviors early is important.
- Cairn Terriers are moderately vocal dogs. They will bark to alert you to visitors, unusual sounds, passing animals, and sometimes just to express excitement or boredom. Their bark is surprisingly loud for their size. Training can help manage excessive barking, but some alerting behavior is deeply ingrained and should be expected. Bored Cairns bark more, so adequate exercise and mental stimulation help reduce unnecessary vocalizations. They are not the quietest breed for apartment living, but consistent training makes them manageable in most situations.
- Cairn Terriers are a long-lived breed, typically living 13 to 15 years, with some individuals reaching 17 or more. Their longevity is one of the breed's most appealing traits. Factors that contribute to a long, healthy life include maintaining a proper weight (obesity shortens lifespan in all dogs), regular veterinary checkups, dental care, and choosing a puppy from a breeder who screens for genetic conditions like liver shunts and Krabbe disease. Their hardy, rugged constitution β developed over centuries in harsh Scottish conditions β contributes to their overall robustness.
