About the Belgian Laekenois
The Belgian Laekenois (pronounced 'LAK-in-wah') is the rarest of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties, distinguished by its rough, tousled, fawn-colored coat. Named after the ChΓ’teau de Laeken, the residence of the Belgian royal family, the Laekenois was originally used to guard linen drying in the fields and to herd livestock. They share the intelligence, versatility, and work ethic of their Belgian Shepherd siblings (Malinois, Tervuren, Groenendael) but with a unique wiry coat and slightly more independent temperament. The Laekenois was the last Belgian Shepherd variety to gain full AKC recognition, in 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Belgian Laekenois are the rarest of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties and one of the rarest AKC breeds overall. They were only fully recognized by the AKC in 2020. Annual registrations are very limited, and finding a puppy in the US often requires international connections or lengthy waiting lists. They are more common in Belgium and neighboring European countries but still uncommon even there. Their rarity is primarily because the other Belgian Shepherd varieties (especially the Malinois) have overshadowed them. Breed enthusiasts are working to increase the population while maintaining health and temperament.
- Belgian Laekenois and Malinois are varieties of the same Belgian Shepherd breed. Their primary difference is coat β Laekenois have a rough, wiry, fawn coat while Malinois have a short, smooth fawn-to-mahogany coat with black mask and overlay. Laekenois are generally slightly less intense and driven than Malinois, making them somewhat more manageable as family pets. Malinois are the preferred choice for police and military work due to their higher drive. Both share intelligence, trainability, and loyalty. The Laekenois offers a Belgian Shepherd experience with slightly reduced intensity compared to the famously driven Malinois.
- Belgian Laekenois can be good family dogs for experienced, active families. They are loyal, protective, and affectionate with their family, including children. Their herding background makes them watchful and engaged family members. However, they need significant daily exercise, mental stimulation, and experienced handling. They can be protective of their family and territory, requiring early socialization to prevent overprotectiveness. They are not suitable for first-time owners or inactive households. For experienced families who enjoy outdoor activities and can commit to training, they are devoted, versatile companions.
