About the Russian Toy
The Russian Toy is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world, weighing just 3 to 6 pounds. Developed in Russia from English Toy Terriers, the breed evolved behind the Iron Curtain in near-complete isolation from Western breeding programs, creating a distinctly Russian dog. They come in smooth-coat and long-coat varieties β the long-coat version has distinctive feathered ears that frame the face like butterfly wings. Russian Toys are active, cheerful, and surprisingly confident for their tiny size. They were virtually unknown outside Russia until the 1990s and were recognized by the AKC in 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Russian Toys are among the smallest dog breeds in the world, weighing just 3 to 6 pounds and standing 8 to 11 inches tall. They are comparable in size to Chihuahuas but have a more refined, deer-like build with long, slender legs. Their extremely small size makes them fragile β broken bones from falls, being stepped on, or rough handling are real risks. They are not suitable for households with young children or large, boisterous dogs. Their tiny size does make them supremely portable and ideal for apartment living. Despite their diminutive stature, they have surprisingly bold, confident personalities.
- The long-coat variety of Russian Toy has distinctive feathered ears β long, silky hair that grows from the ears and frames the face like decorative fringes or butterfly wings. These feathered ears are one of the breed's most recognizable and charming features, giving them an elegant, almost fairy-like appearance. The ear feathering can take two to three years to fully develop. The smooth-coat variety lacks this feathering and has short, close-lying hair on the ears. Both coat varieties are equally accepted in the breed standard, but the feathered ears of the long-coat variety are particularly eye-catching.
- Russian Toys are excellent apartment dogs β one of the best breeds for small-space living. Their tiny size means they need minimal space, and their modest exercise needs (20-30 minutes daily) are easily met with short walks and indoor play. They are clean, relatively quiet for a toy breed, and produce minimal mess. They are content in cozy apartments as long as they receive adequate attention and companionship. Their main apartment consideration is safety β their extremely small size makes them vulnerable to injury from doors, furniture, and even being accidentally sat on. Careful management of their environment is essential.
