About the Basenji

The Basenji is one of the most ancient dog breeds, originating in Central Africa where they were used by pygmy tribes for hunting small game in dense forests. Known as the 'barkless dog,' Basenjis do not bark but produce a unique yodeling sound called a 'baroo.' They are cat-like in many ways โ€” fastidiously clean, independent, and aloof with strangers. Their short, fine coat, tightly curled tail, and wrinkled forehead give them a distinctive, alert expression. Basenjis are intelligent, curious, and mischievous, requiring experienced owners who appreciate their unique, primitive personality.
